Medicare supplement plan N was introduced in June of 2010 as an option allowing Medicare recipients to have lower monthly payments in exchange for having exposure to deductibles and copays.
Medigap plan N really fills a bit of a void between the attraction of the lower premiums of Medicare Advantage plans and the more expensive but better coverage of Medicare supplement insurance.
For the frugal person who might also be in pretty good health this might be the ideal plan. It tends to be one of the more cost-effective polices and only has relatively minor financial exposure.
As you can see in the chart below, Medicare supplement N covers all the deductibles in part A (hospitalization) and only has you exposed to the part B deductible which is an annual deductible and not too significant and then co-pays of up to $20 for a doctor's visit (primary care or specialist and including any x-rays, lab-work, or outpatient surgeries) or $50 if you happen to need the emergency room.
The one area of exposure of slight concern is plan N does not cover the Medicare part B excess charges. Medicare excess charges occur when a doctor doesn't accept Medicare assignment and is, therefore, allowed to charge in excess of 15% over Medicare's rates. With plan N you would have to pay those costs out if your own pocket. Luckily there are not currently a significant amount of doctors that don't accept Medicare assignment.
If you want to cover excess charges you might consider
Medicare supplement plan G or if you would just prefer not to worry about paying anything out-of-pocket for medical services you might also consider
Medicare supplement plan F. You might be surprised at how affordable these plans can be.
