What Are the Best Medicare Supplement Plans?

Best Medigap plans

Finding the best Medicare supplement plans for you might take time. Each individual has unique needs and the best plan for one person might not be the best for another. Of all of the Medicare supplement plans, we find that the top 3 purchased are Plan F, Plan G, and Plan N.

Is Plan F One of the Best Medicare Supplement Plans?

Medicare Supplement Plan F is among the most popular Medicare supplement plans. Plan F covers:

  • The Part A deductible
  • Part B deductible
  • Part B excess charges
  • Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • Blood (first 3 pints)
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
  • Foreign travel emergency (to plan limits)

To say Plan F is one of the best Medicare supplement plans is subjective. All Medicare supplement companies are standardized, meaning you will get the same benefits of each plan regardless of the company that you choose. Some of these benefits may include programs such as SilverSneakers for seniors and more depending on the plan you choose. If you choose Medicare Supplement Plan F, you may receive some of these benefits.

While Plan F is typically one of the more expensive plans, the overall savings might prove beneficial to you in the long run. With Plan F, you’ll get the most comprehensive coverage out of all the other Medicare supplement plans, meaning you won’t be exposed to as many – or any – out-of-pocket costs, depending on the situation.

If you feel like you can sacrifice some of the coverage benefits for a lower monthly premium, Plan G or Plan N might be one of the best Medicare supplement plans for you.

Is Plan G One of the Best Medicare Supplement Plans?

Medicare Supplement Plan G offers most of the same benefits as Plan F. These benefits include:

  • Part A deductible
  • Part B excess charges
  • Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • Blood (first 3 pints)
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
  • Foreign travel emergency (to plan limits)

The one benefit that Plan G does not offer, is coverage of the Part B deductible. Many seniors decide that the loss of this benefit is justifiable, due to the typically lower monthly premiums with Plan G.

Other than the coverage difference, Plan G functions the same way as Plan F. You’ll receive a myriad of benefits, flexibility to choose the doctor you want, and a simple claims-paying process. Some seniors find Plan G to be one of the best Medicare supplement plans because of its high amount of coverage and lower premiums. Over time, many find that it saves them money due to the lack of frequent out-of-pocket costs you might have to pay with other Medicare supplement plans.

Is Plan N One of the Best Medicare Supplement Plans?

As the plan with the third best coverage options, it is clear why many find Plan N to be one of the best Medicare supplement plans. Plan N covers:

  • Part A deductible
  • Medicare Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • Blood (first 3 pints)
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
  • Foreign travel emergency (to plan limits)

Like Plan G, Plan N does not cover the Part B deductible, but unlike Plans F & G, Plan N does not cover any Part B excess charges. Plan N also requires copayments of $20 per doctor visit and $50 per emergency room visit. We’ve found that Plan N might save you up to 25% on your monthly premiums, Part B deductible, and any copayments aside.

Plan N has the same standardization and doctor benefits as any of the other plans, so you don’t have to worry about receiving different benefits from different companies. When choosing a plan, you will typically be judging the plan by its price and the credibility of the company.

There are many other Medicare supplement plans to consider, and a plan other than Plan F, G, and N might be one of the best Medicare supplement plans for you. The best way to find out the best plan for your situation is to discuss your needs with your agent. The graph below shows what we’ve found to be the breakdown of people who purchase a plan.

Plan F is Going Away

While discussing the best plans for you, it is important to note that Plan F is going away in 2020. If you join Medicare before January 1, 2020, you will still have Plan F available as a choice to you when choosing your plans. However, if you’re joining Medicare after January 1, 2020, you won’t be able to purchase Plan F.

In this case, Plan G or Plan N might be great alternatives to the full-coverage Plan F.
