The Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period: 7 Things to Know

Many people are unsure about what they need to do during the Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period. In order to alleviate confusion, here are some tips.

  1. The Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period (MADP) is one of the only time periods during the year when you can disenroll from your Medicare Advantage plan.
  2. It occurs January 1 – February 14 of every year.
  3. It allows you to disenroll from your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare. This is not the time when you can switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
  4. If you choose to leave your Medicare Advantage plan, you will be switched to Original Medicare and also become able to obtain a Medicare Supplement Insurance. You may need to go through underwriting to determine eligibility.
  5. If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan, you can replace it with the basic Medicare Part D Drug Plan. To do this, you can either disenroll from the Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan before you enroll in Medicare Part D, or you can simply enroll in Medicare Part D and it will automatically disenroll you from your Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan.
  6. Any change you make during the Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period will become effective on the 1st of the following month.
  7. If you are currently a Medicare beneficiary and/or have a Medicare Supplement Insurance policy, the Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period does not apply to you. Medicare Supplement policyholders are able to apply for a different plan/carrier any time throughout the year.
