Medigap Plan A
Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan A is the most basic of Medicare supplement insurance plans. In fact, some outlines of coverage actually list the description of the services as basic services.

Medigap Plan A Coverage

Medicare Supplemental Plan A covers the following Medicare expenses:

  • Medicare Part A Coinsurance & Hospital Costs – Covered
  • Medicare Part B Coinsurance and Copayment – Covered
  • Blood (First 3 Pints) – Covered
  • Part A Hospice Care Coinsurance or Copayment – Covered
  • Skilled Nursing Facility Coinsurance –  Not Covered
  • Medicare Part A Deductible –  Not Covered
  • Medicare Part B Deductible –  Not Covered
  • Medicare Part B Excess Charges –  Not Covered
  • Foreign Travel Emergency (up to plan limits) –  Not Covered

Medicare Supplement Plan A covers the coinsurance associated with a hospital stay (Part A benefits) and provides an additional 365 days of coverage in the hospital during your lifetime (but only while on the policy). It also covers the coinsurance and co-pays associated with your Medicare part B which is your outpatient benefits. This plan also covers the first 3 pints of blood (Medicare covers everything after) and co-pays and coinsurance for Part A Hospice care.

What Medigap Plan A Does NOT Cover

It is important to know what Medicare supplement A doesn’t cover. Medigap Plan A does not cover Skilled Nursing Facility coinsurance or the Part A or Part B deductibles or Excess Charges or Foreign Travel Emergency. A lot of these gaps in coverage can get rather expensive in certain scenarios.

Medigap Plan A Benefits

In most states, every company is required to offer Plan A, and in some states it is the only plan available for Medicare recipients under the age of 65 (due to disability). However, if you are over the age of 65, you might want to consider a Medicare Supplement Plan G or a Medigap Plan N as an alternative to Plan A. You will get much more protection and coverage with Plan G or N, and you typically won’t pay that much more.
